Around 232 Kandakadu inmates surrender (Update)

(Update) - 232 detainees who escaped from the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center have been taken into police custody and are to be produced before court, reports say.

Following a clash between two groups of detainees at the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center around 600 detainees had escaped.

The police and the army have launched a joint operation to apprehend the escapees.

One dead at Kandakadu clash

A tense situation has been brewing from last night at the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center after the death of an inmate, reports say.

The dead inmate is said to be a 36-year old from Mutwal.

'Lankadeepa' reports that over 400 inmates had escaped the facility during the clash.

The Army and Police have been deployed to control the situation and apprehend the escaped inmates.
