Mahinda still has 187 police bodyguards - Sagala Featured

Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa is still having 187 policemen as his bodyguards, law and order minister Sagala Ratnayake told parliament today (05).

Forty two policemen had been withdrawn from his security detail after a routine, proper evaluation of Rajapaksa’s security, he said, stressing that it was not politically-intended or an act of revenge as claimed, he said.

When he retired, Rajapaksa had requested 102 personnel from the Army and 103 personnel from the police as his bodyguards, but he was given 203 MSD policemen and 26 STF commandos, said the minister.

As per the security evaluation report, there was a surplus of personnel attached to his security detail, he said, adding that it was normal procedure to increase or reduce VIP security following an evaluation, being carried out by the IGP.

He noted that ex-president Chandrika Kumaratunga was having only 69 bodyguards.
