21A to the Cabinet!

The Audit Act will be amended to enable surcharges to be levied on those involved in financial irregularities, said Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksha, Minister of Justice, Prison Reforms and Constitutional Reforms.

He said that the 21st Amendment to the Constitution will be presented to the Cabinet today (23), including the re-establishment of the Audit Services Commission.

The Minister further said that the establishment of the Procurement Commission will also be included in the new amendment and the establishment of these commissions with powers vested in them will help prevent bribery and corruption in the public sector.

Auditor General Chulantha Wickramaratne has handed over a proposal to establish the Audit Services Commission with powers vested in them to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena and other authorities.

The Auditor General said that this proposal also includes suggestions on how to amend the Audit Act to empower the Commission.
