Best if President's 'joke' becomes serious - SB Featured

The president was ‘only joking’ when he told the cabinet that Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka should be given powers of the military in order to discipline the country, says minister S.B. Dissanayake, adding however, that it will be best if the joke becomes ‘serious.’

Dissanayake, speaking to the media at the SLFP headquarters yesterday (27), said he too, was present when the president made the remark that sent the cabinet into laughter.

According to him, that remark is nothing but a joke and should not be taken seriously.

Special units are not needed to create discipline in the country, and in an emergency, he said, even he could act appropriately.

After Dissanayake left the media briefing, his cabinet colleague Vijith Vijayamuni Soyza joined in, and journalists placed the matter before him for a comment.

Soyza said it was no laughing matter, and such an appointment would be most opportune, and would be made on a decision by the cabinet.
