Gotabhaya claims he started plan for waste dump relocation Featured

Ex-defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa says he had made plans in 2013, together with the World Bank, to relocate the waste dump at Methotamulla in Puttalam.

He has told ‘Rivira’ that the WB had studied the project and spent money on it, with the planning taking up around 1 ½ years.

Following several rounds of talks with the Railways Department, a decision was taken to lay a rail track to Meethotamulla.

Cabinet approval was obtained for the project, and the required funding allotted from 2014 budget to start it in 2015, said Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

However, it could not be implemented due to the regime change in 2015, he said.

Deputy general manager of the CEB Rohan Seneviratne, a talented officer, was made additional secretary of the defence ministry and handed over the five-year Metro Colombo development project.

Now, minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has resumed it, putting up boards with the date of commencement being mentioned as 2016, he charged.
