Sajith Premadasa, who was elected to Parliament for the first time from the United National Party in the 2000 General Elections, held the posts of Deputy Minister of Health, Minister of Housing, etc. and at the previous General Election he won the largest number of seats in the Samagi Janabalavegaya and became the Leader of the Opposition.
During his tenure as the Minister of Housing, he played a pivotal role in further improving the housing program launched by his father, the late President Ranasinghe Premadasa.
He also contested for the presidency as the United National Party candidate in the last presidential election.
