Individuals who were injured from the attacks and the families affected had filed cases with the Colombo District Court naming Former President Maithripala Sirisena as the first accused.

The request was rejected by Colombo Additional District Judge Chathurika Silva.

Maithripala Sirisena made the request via his counsel on the 29th of November 2021 to release him from all the cases filed over the Easter Attacks, naming him as the first accused.

These cases were filed naming Former President Maithripala Sirisena, Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, Former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, Former Director of the State Intelligence Serivce Nilantha Jayawardena, as the accused.
