ASP to address Qatar's travel alert

Sri Lankan ambassador to Qatar - A.S.P. Liyanage says that he is taking measures to tackle the travel alert issued earlier this week by the Foreign ministry of Qatar.

A statement issued by the Qatari officials cited the spread of swine flu (H1N1) in Sri Lanka and warned Qatari nationals not to travel to Sri Lanka except in cases of extreme necessity until health conditions improved.

Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror', Mr. Liyanage said that he is currently in Sri Lanka and had already spoken to Health minister - Rajitha Senaratne on this regard. The minister had said that the ministry would issue a statement on this regard, he added.

He added that he had already contacted the Qatari officials over the phone and would also be taking up the matter with the Qatar ambassador in Sri Lanka, during a meeting today.

Mr Liyanage further said that he would be cutting his trip to Sri Lanka short to return to Qatar and address the matter from there.

Earlier, the ministry of Health had informed the Foreign Ministry that the World Health Organisation has not called for travel restrictions being imposed owing to H1N1.
