Finance minister - Basil Rajapaksa was more than a little annoyed when Gevindu Kumaratunga had added his voice to the criticisms aired against the government. He had said, "Aren't you a MP of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)? You are here as a party leader. Don't do this."
In response, Gevindu had reportedly said he represented the Yuthukama Dialog Circle, which is a SLPP affiliated organization.
Heatedly, Basil had said," Then we will also have to bring people from ViyathMaga. People from this circle and that are not brought here. Only party leaders are brought here. You are here as a SLPP MP. Therefore, do not do such things."
Addressing the entire gathering in a sharp tone, the Finance minister had warned, "You small parties are working together to overthrow the government. I can do that too. I can get people from smaller parties but I will not do that. Do not engage in such conspiracies."
Since the allegation by the Finance minister was quite a serious one, Industries minister - Wimal Weerawansa had said, " Minister Basil, do not think so. We are not conspiring. We are trying to safeguard the government. This is a constructive action."
