SLBC loses ability to go Facebook Live!

It is reported that the Facebook livestreaming facility of the state owned Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), has been suspended after a violation of broadcasting rights.

The SLBC has been doing a ball by ball live commentary of the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup tournament through the National Sports Broadcast - Vision FM. However, a Facebook Live had also been done simultaneously, showing video content of the commentators as well. This action had violated the official broadcasting rights granted to the SLBC, leading to the suspension.

The Facebook Live had been done with the involvement of Mr. Bandula Samanwathuregama at the suggestion of the Director General of the SLBC - Chandrapala Liyanage.

Although the SLBC Chairman - Hudson Samarasinghe had not been completely enthusiastic about the Facebook Live stream, the move had been backed by two persons including one who had been the 'unofficial chauffeur' of Mr. Samanwathuregama before the latter's expulsion from the SLBC in the past.

It is said that although the SLBC is struggling with staff payments including the overtime payments of those who worked during the pandemic, Rs. 800,000 has been spent on this livestream alone.

Studio No. 05 has been used for this broadcast and camera equipment that was set up for the livestream had been removed from the studio yesterday (19) afternoon.
