Approval on hold for H’tota port handover Featured

The ministers, at their meeting on March 28 decided to suspend granting approval for the cabinet paper to lease out Hambantota port to China, pending the receiving of the report by a cabinet subcommittee appointed to study the handover.

The leasing agreement was extensively discussed at the meeting chaired by president Maithripala Sirisena, several ministers said, adding that he instructed them to speak to the subcommittee members about any outstanding issues.

The president also told the meeting that discussions should be held with China Merchant Port Holdings before leasing out the Hambantota port and adjoining land for investment to the company.
