400 containers with essential  goods stuck due to shortage of dollars

The Importers Association has complained to the Government stating that  over 400 containers with essential goods remain uncleared from the Harbour due to the shortage of dollars.

They say their Letters of Credit cannot be settled due to the dollar shortage and they are forced to pay high fees to retain them at the terminals.

Potatoes, Dhal, Onions, Chilli, and Sprats are among the goods in these containers, and the importers warn that there might be an essential goods price hike to cover the rising costs associated with the delay in clearance.

The matter was earlier brought to the notice of the Government Expenditure Management Committee which met recently.
