(Update) - The Election Commission today (July 07) published the Gazette Extraordinary declaring SLPP’s founder Basil Rajapaksa as a Member of Parliament.
Basil to be in Parliament tomorrow ; Ketagoda to Australia
Yesterday, Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) General Secretary - MP Sagara Kariyawasam had formally submitted Mr. Rajapaksa's name to the Election Commission to fill the parliamentary seat vacated by MP Jayantha Ketagoda.
The Elections Commission is scheduled to meet today at 9.00 am to discuss the nomination of Basil Rajapaksa for the National List.
Thereafter, the name of Mr. Basil Rajapaksa as a Member of Parliament will be gazetted.
Mr. Rajapaksa is expected to be sworn in before the Speaker tomorrow (08).
Ketagoda to Australia
Meanwhile, resigned parliamentarian Jayantha Ketagoda is to be appointed as the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Australia.
'Unofficial' Finance Minister
Government sources also say that the President has decided to appoint Basil as the minister of Economic Development and the State minister of Finance, after the latter swears in as a MP.
Although he will not be officially named as the minister of Finance, he would be tasked with several state institutions as well as many financial responsibilities.
Fuel prices to dip
Meanwhile, it is widely expected that the fuel prices as well as the Cost Of Living will dip after the entry of Basil.
