According to the Ministry of Environment, a minimum of over 10 million lunch sheets are disposed to the environment on a daily basis in Sri Lanka, and these non-biodegradable lunch sheets take around 02-03 years to degrade in the soil.
Based on scientific evidence, it has been confirmed that micro-plastic particles from lunch sheets can remain in the soil for more than 200-years.
Thereby, taking into account the aforementioned factors, Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the respective officials to ban the use of all types of lunch sheets in Sri Lanka, during a discussion held on Tuesday (Jun. 22).
