He left behind his beloved partner Ms. Malathi Samarasundara and his children Prabhavi Dias, Sarasi Samarasundara, Sayuru Samarasundara and Thejani Samarasundara-Southorn and his devoted immediate family of Sumangala Dias, Karina Samarasundara, Krishan De Silva and Eli Southorn together with his grandchildren Varuni Ekanayake, Tusari Ekanayake, Bimsara Dias, Visakha Dias, Senaka Samarasundara and Aveesh Samarasundara-Southorn.
He was a dearly loved and significant individual with unshakable conviction and determination. Once retired, he spent his spare time lovingly with his family, especially his grandchildren and as always educating and guiding those around him, his passion.
With the commencement of his primary education at Agalawatta Bilingual Senior School and Matugama Madya Maha Vidyalaya. Dr. Nimal Samarasundara then graduated from the University of Peradeniya in 1960. He concluded his education by taking oaths as a Lawyer of the Supreme Court and successfully completing his PhD in Law at the University of Delhi, India.
Incipiently with his intention to serve the government, he commenced his career as an acting Principal in 1963 which he then progressed to Senior Assistant Secretary to the Ministry of Education and the Secretary of the Ministry of Buddha Sasana in the year of 1998 with the conclusion of his career as the Secretary to Hon. Speaker of Parliament in 2015.
