MV X-Press Pearl is sinking : reports (Pics) Featured

The fire gutted vessel MV X-Press Pearl has begun to sink due to a water leak.

The Navy has said that 50% of the vessel had sunk.

Earlier today (02), a special team of the Sri Lanka Navy had boarded the vessel to support salvage efforts. The towing of the ship began after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday issued directives to tow the 'X-Press Pearl' ship out to deep seas.

Meanwhile, Minister Kanchana Wijesekara says the Dept of Fisheries suspended vessels entering from the Negombo Lagoon and fishing from Panadura to Negombo with immediate effect as it has been indicated that the vessel is sinking.

He further said measures have been taken to protect the Negombo Lagoon from any debris or an oil spill from the vessel.

Fishermen in the deep seas and in and around the Negombo coast have also been requested to be vigilant of debris from the vessel.
