Affected fisherman to be compensated

Fishermen affected in areas polluted by the debris of the MV X-press Pearl ship, are to be compensated for the loss of their daily income.

State minister of Fisheries - Kanchana Wijesekara said thus during a media briefing held at the Department of Government Information today (28).

The government had earlier decided to suspect fishing activities in the affected areas until further notice.

"We have counted those who are engaged in fishing around the Negombo lagoon as well as in the districts of Gampaha and Colombo. There are around 5,600 fishing vessels. There are around 28 sectors linked to the fisheries industry. We have decided to provide compensation to all of them who are losing their daily income. Until it is deemed suitable, we have decided to suspend fishing activities in these areas, he added.
