1st batch of vaccines under COVAX facility, arrives in SL

A consignment of Covid-19 vaccines as part of the World Health Organisation COVAX facility arrived in Sri Lanka early this morning (07).

The 264,000 doses arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport on board an Emirates Airlines cargo flight from the manufacturing organisation of Serum Institute, India.

Following the vaccination of civilians in the districts of Colombo and Gampaha, those at risk in Kandy district will be vaccinated, minister Sudharshini Fernandopulle said.

As part of the agreement between the Ministry of Health and the COVAX Facility, the supply of the 1.44 million doses will be procured by UNICEF in stages until May 2021, subject to the availability from manufacturers and authorization by WHO Emergency Use Listing (EUL).
