Covid-19 UK strain found in samples from several areas Featured

The Covid-19 strain initially identified from the UK, has been detected in random samples from persons in Colombo, Awissawella, Biyagama and Vavuniya.

Speaking to media, Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, the Director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura has said that 92 samples obtained from mid January to February were subjected to a sequencing process. Some of these samples had been from overseas returnees.

Although the majority of the samples were detected as the Sri Lankan lineage B.1.411, several samples were detected to belong to the B.1.1.7 UK lineage.

Dr. Jeewandara noted that the UK strain has at least 50% higher transmissibility than other strains.
