SLBFE ordered to provide free air tickets to expats

Minister of Labour Nimal Siripala de Silva has issued directives to provide Sri Lankan expatriates, registered with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, seeking to return home owing to the coronavirus and various hardships, to be granted free air tickets.

The Minister addressing a media briefing said several persons claim expatriates are not being repatriated as they are unable to purchase flight tickets adding however that he looked into the matter and did not find such a serious issue.

The Minister noted he issued directives to the Bureau to gather information pertaining to expatriates and any family members residing in relevant countries, and purchase air tickets if they don’t have the required funds.

Minister Siripala de Silva claimed the government can arrange flights for a majority of expatriates and purchase tickets for them adding however that concerns have arisen over quarantine facilities for those who arrive in the country.

He instructed officials of the Bureau to ensure they provide prompt solutions to concerns that may arise at quarantine centres.
