2 Navy men arrested over student abductions Featured

Two Navy officers have been arrested by the CID in connection with the abduction of six international school students for extortion and their subsequent murder in 2008.

The suspects are Commodore Sumith Ranasinghe and Leading Seaman Lakshman Udaya Kumara.

Wattala police had received a complaint with regard to the kidnapping of the students who had been returning from a party given by a colleague who was to leave for England for education.

CID investigations into the abduction and murder of 28 schoolboys and youths from wealthy families in Colombo and Trincomalee revealed that certain members of the Navy intelligence were responsible.

One of the abductees was a Sinhala youth, over whose murder a provincial chief minister too, is facing accusations.

Complaints have been made with regard to all these incidents, but the CID is investigating only the six international school students.
