Speaking during a media briefing held in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne said a majority of the MPs in Parliament at present are former members of the UNP. He said they were elected to Parliament through the votes of UNP members.
MP Wickramaratne claimed that the new party was formed with an aim to rally several other political factions and regain governing power. He therefore stressed that his faction is always keen on holding discussions with the UNP to continue its political journey.
On a separate note, Parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne says the county’s debt has increased exponentially during the present administration’s term in office.
He said in 2015, the country’s debt was at Rs.7.5 trillion and it increased by Rs.5.5 trillion at the end of 2019.
MP Wickramaratne noted that during the short time period the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna-led administration has been governing the country, the debt has increased by Rs.4 trillion.
He is of the view that during the next few years, country’s debt will increase to dangerous levels.
The Parliamentarian attributed the trend to fraud and corruption within the state mechanic.
He said that the present administration is seeking a Rs.10 billion loan to purchase vaccines adding that it is evident that the government has failed to prioritize its programs.
