Report has justified Mahara protest - Sajith Featured

Leader of the Opposition - Sajith Premadasa says that the report of the five-member committee appointed to investigate the Mahara Prison unrest has confirmed that the detainees had been shot with live ammunition.

Speaking in Parliament today (10) he added that committee observations have proven that the protest of the inmates was reasonable.

Noting that the main demand of the protesting inmates was to carry out PCR testing, Mr. Premadasa said that the committee report proved that the number of inmates at the facility stood at three times the possible capacity.

He also pointed out that demands to provide edible food and to remove the Covid-19 patients from the facility too, were deemed as reasonable by the committee.

However, Justice Minister Ali Sabry said that the report tabled in Parliament yesterday (09) was not complete and that the full report would be submitted within a month.

Eleven inmates were killed and 106 others were injured in the Mahara prison riot that took place on Nov. 29. Eight of the 11 dead inmates were posthumously tested positive for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the CID has recorded the statements of 165 people with regard to the incident.
