Ramanathan appointment is not against tradition - LfD Featured

Lawyers for Democracy observes that tradition has been followed in the case of appointing R. Kannan Ramanathan as the Jaffna high court judge.

Co-convener of LfD Lal Wijenayake says however, the process of judges’ appointment should be made more organized.

LalwijenayakaHe is responding to objections raised by the secretary of the Bar Association and the Judges Association to this appointment.

BASL secretary Amal Randeniya has told the media that their president should have sought the executive committee’s opinion before recommending the appointment.

But, Wijenayake told BBC Sandeshaya that there had been no such tradition, adding that a process of a vote at the BASL executive committee should not happen.

BASL president Geoffrey Alagaratnam had recommended the appointment in question to president Maithripala Sirisena, he said, refuting claims that the recommendation had come from a political party.

Citing this appointment the judges association has boycotted the BASL election for office-bearers, which has been postponed indefinitely.
