80kg empty ball point pens released to environment daily

Minister of Environment, Mahinda Amaraweera says that approximately 80 kilograms of empty ballpoint pens used by school students are released daily to the environment.

He stated the above while participating in a discussion held at the Ministry of Environment.

Accordingly, it was revealed that around 29,200 kilograms of empty ballpoint pens are released into the environment in a year.

In the same way, a large number of plastic toothbrushes are released to the environment on a daily basis, and discarded ballpoint pens and toothbrushes cause a great deal of soil pollution.

This is because both products take 50-75 years to decompose.

The Minister further stated that in order to prevent the environmental pollution from the release of empty pens a program will be formulated to collect and recycle the waste material.
