Farmers Federation opposes decision to import rice

The All Island Farmers Federation (AIFF) has greatly opposed the government's decision to import rice to maintain ample stocks.

Noting that there is already a surplus of 900,000 metric tonnes of rice for 2021, the AIFF National Organiser - Namal Karunaratne says it should be clarified on which basis it was decided to import rice when such a surplus exists.

He was speaking at a media briefing held in Dambulla  today (25).

Earlier, it was reported that Lanka Sathosa has reportedly requested a loan of Rs. 2,241 million from the People's Bank to import rice required to maintain a safe stock of rice in the country.
