MT New Diamond owners agree to settle Rs 340 m claim

Owners of Crude Oil Tanker MT New Diamond have informed the Attorney General of their agreement to settle the interim claim of Government stakeholders in full.

Coordinating Secretary to the AG State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said the owners had agreed to settle the full claim for Rs 340 million.

The oil tanker caught fire 38 nautical miles off Sangamankanda Point in the east of Sri Lanka, on Sep. 03 and the fire was doused after a joint effort of the Sri Lanka Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guards and other international assistance.

AG Dappula de Livera last week requested an initial compensation of Rs. 340 million from the ship owners based on the estimated cost incurred by Sri Lanka.
