Team to probe Knuckles destruction Featured

The Department of Wildlife has stated that a team has been appointed to look into the illegal clearing of the  Knuckles Forest Reserve.

Conservator General of Forests W.A.C.Weragoda said that legal action will be sought if anything illegal has taken place.

Environmentalists had expressed concern that around five areas of land in the Knuckles Forest Reserve was cleared by a private entity to commence vegetable cultivation.

Noting that those who had engaged in the clearing had claimed the land was a privately owned one, environmentalists say it is surprising that no related institution was warned of such a destruction in such an environmentally sensitive area.
