Sri Lanka Police said the gangster was identified as Chaminda Sandamal Edirisooriya alias ‘Chamiya’ and the Western Province Crimes Division had visited Gamapah to arrest him.
When the suspect was being escorted to the Gampaha Police following his arrest, he had made an attempt to snatch the firearm of a police officer present at the time, said Sri Lanka Police.
The suspect was gunned down in police retaliatory fire, Sri Lanka Police added.
The body of the 41 year gangster was moved to the Gampaha General Hospital and Sri Lanka Police said he was a big-time drug trafficker in Sri Lanka.
Police said ‘Chamiya’ was directly involved in the shooting inside the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court premises in 2015 which injured notorious underworld kingpin ‘Samayan’ who was later brutally gunned down two years later.
‘Chamiya’ was directly involved in the shooting at a Department of Prisons bus in February 2017, which eventually saw the end of ‘Samayan’.
The coordinated attack on the Prison Bus killed underworld kingpin “Samayan” also known as Aruna Udayashntha Pathirana and 5 other inmates.
