It is said that Rs. 30 million from the fixed deposit of the PS to pay contractors who are paving roads with cement stones.
For a while now, the PS has been using a stone branded as 'Saviya'. The company producing these stones have been registered under the name of the wife of Prasanna Ranaweera, before 2020. Now it is registered under the name of his brother-in-law, reports say.
Opposition members of the PS charge that this huge money transfer is being done to conduct Prasanna Ranaweera's election campaign for the upcoming General election. Ranaweera is joining the fray under the ticket of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.
It is said that the PS has estimated the total cost of stones for paving roads maintained by them in the first two months of 2020 as over 123,071,553/-.
During the Covid-19 epidemic hit months of March, April and May, the PS had estimated Rs. 17,696,367/- for the stones.
It accounts for 80% of capital expenditure and is said to be taxpayer money.
When 'Sri Lanka Mirror' inquired from the Chairperson of the Kelaniya PS - Mrs. Shanthi Kumuduni on how Rs. 30 million of the Pradeshiya Sabha's fixed deposit was transferred to their current account, she said that she could not answer over the phone.
The reason, she said, was that she was unable to recall the exact sums of money at that moment.
She also said that these questions could be answered if we came to the PS and such decisions are taken with the backing of PS members.
However, she said she is capable of providing a written reply.
