Peraheras allowed to be held sans spectators 

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has advised the Diyawadana Nilame and Basnayake Nilames to organise this year's Peraheras at main places of worship and Devalas giving priority to traditional and religious rituals.

A media release issued by the PMD says that the President said emphasised that the perahera processions which are organised centring around the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy as well as the Devalas in Kataragama, Devinuwara and Sabaragamuwa should adhere to health guidelines implemented for the prevention of the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The directives were issued at a meeting of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 pertaining to the organising of annual processions this afternoon (12).

The media release notes that the public is not allowed to participate and view the Peraheras at any religious place this year. Also, the traditional 'Pada Yatra' held ahead of the Kataragama will not be permitted this year.

The Presidential Task Force has also emphasised the necessity of conducting all festivals with the least number of artistes while adhering to health guidelines. Artistes representing different areas are required to obtain a report from health authorities in their respective areas.

Also, Kumbal and Randoli Peraheras of the Temple of the Tooth will be telecast live during all 10 days.
