Sunil Ratnayake gets presidential pardon

Former Army Staff Sergeant R.M. Sunil Ratnayake who was sentenced to death has been granted Presidential pardon by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, reports say.

This was reported by state TV ITN. In a video on Facebook, Ven. Medille Pannaloka Thera of the 'Sinhale' organisation had also stated thus. 

The former Staff Sergeant attached to Sri Lanka Army who was found guilty for murder in Mirusuvil, Jaffna in 2000 was sentenced to death on June 25, 2015 by the Colombo High Court after a 13-year-trial.

On November 27, 2002, the Attorney General indicted him on 19 charges in the murder of Gnanapalan Raviveeran, Sellamuttu Theivakulasingham, Vilvarajah Pratheepan, Sinniah Vilvarajah, Nadesu Jeyachandran, Kathiran Gnanachandran, Gnanachandran Santhan and Vilvarajah Prasath in Mirusuvil of the Jaffna peninsula before a High Court at Trial-at-Bar in Colombo.

The Trial-at-Bar bench found former Staff Sergeant R.M. Sunil Ratnayake guilty for multiple counts including the murder. Later Supreme Court of Sri Lanka also upheld the decision made by the The Trial-at-Bar bench.
