April school holidays to start tomorrow - Dullas

It has been decided to start the April school holidays from tomorrow (12), education minister - Dullas Alahapperuma says.

The holidays will be continue until April 20, he added.

The minister was speaking at a special media briefing at the ministry.

The April holidays were initially scheduled to start from April 06.

No instructions to close down schools

Meanwhile, Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera noted that they have in no way given instructions to the Education ministry to close down schools despite a Covid-19 positive patient was reported from the country.

He says that after the disease was declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization, it was accepted accordingly in the country.

However, the closure of a school or public place should be decided only if cases are found from those venues, he adds.

Dr. Samaraweera further notes that it was quite unnecessary to close down the school or classes of the Covid-19 patient's children.

Those who have come in contact with the patient have been already quarantined and the public need not panic, he adds.

"We have informed the education ministry that there is no need to close down schools. But that decision lies with the ministry. Should a Covid-19 positive patient be reported from a certain school, we would close it down. If the disease is being spread in a certain area, public venues of that area can be closed down. Such measures are decided only after assessing whether there is a risk of the disease being spread islandwide. There is no reason to panic unnecessarily," he said.
