However, the Sajith Premadasa led faction opposed the decision.
A special meeting of the UNP Working Committee was held at Sirikotha –UNP Headquarters, yesterday (01), in order to come to a final decision on the party’s election symbol and after the meeting the Party Leader told the media that the Working Committee had agreed to contest under the ‘Elephant’ symbol.
However, issuing a statement the Opposition Leader’s office stated that the Working Committee meeting of the UNP had ended without an agreement regarding the symbol that the party is going to contest under.
The statement also noted that certain parties are engaged in false propaganda that the elephant symbol had been approved but there is no truth to these claims. The Opposition Leader’s statement frowned upon such false claims with repulsion.
The statement further said, “If the elephant symbol is given to the coalition we would accept it, but the Working Committee had not responded positively to this proposal. Although they kept arguing about it, they did not have even an iota of desire to come to an agreement regarding the symbol matter.
The Working Committee meeting ended amidst futile arguments and by hanging on to such regardless matters, it would only delay our camp banding together to defeat the oppressive government.”
