CID probe into purchase of Rs. 1.3 billion worth communications equipment

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has initiated an investigation into the purchase of communication equipment worth Rs. 1.3 billion in 2016 and 2017 without following due process, Sinhala daily Lankadeepa reported according to sources.

Some of the equipment purchased are not functioning at present and the packaging of some equipment has not even been removed,

It is reported that the equipment has been purchased from a company in the Middle East and brought to Sri Lanka in three consignments.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the company that imported the communications equipment to the country has now been closed.

It has been reported according to sources, that a retired army officer is to be questioned in this regard while a senior politician has been involved in these purchases and the CID is investigating the matter.

It has been revealed that 10 mobile phones have been purchased for the use of some VIPs and they are not functioning at present. It is also learned that the proper tender procedure has not been followed when buying these phones.

Sources have said that any advice has not been sought from the police, military, intelligence agencies or anyone who specializes in these phones when the phones were purchased.
