Amaraweera to lodge CID complaint

Passenger Transport, Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has decided to lodge a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding the allegations against him on the purchasing of a vehicle worth Rs.42 million during the Good Governance era.

Issuing a statement, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera refuted the allegations that he had purchased a Mercedes Benz worth Rs. 42 million when he was the Minister of Mahaweli Development.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera was appointed as the State Minister of Mahaweli Development during the Good Governance government on May 30, 2017.

The Minister did not receive any vehicle during that period and held several ministerial portfolios for the last 10 years and has only utilized the vehicles used by the previous ministers that were assigned to those ministries.

“The report presented by Minister Johnston Fernando last Friday (7) in Parliament states that a vehicle was requested by the Mahaweli Development Minister on 27.10.2016. Yet Mahinda Amaraweera was appointed as the Mahaweli Development Minster on 30.05.2017. It is hilarious to air or publish such news which clearly shows a gap of seven months,” it said.

The statement further said that the allegation which was made in Parliament by Minister Johnston Fernando received wide media coverage and it was a serious stain on his character.

Therefore, he will lodge a complaint with the CID to investigate as to who purchased the vehicle, and as to where the vehicle is and who is using it at present. He also said that he will make a special statement in Parliament regarding the issue.
