Plans to limit non-communicable disease causing milk powder Featured

Health and Indigenous Medicine Minister Pavithra Vanniarachchi said in parliament yesterday that the possibility of limiting the import of milk powder would be looked into and appropriate measures would be taken.

She said this in response to a question raised by MP Buddhika Pathirana and a supplementary question raised by JVP-MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

The minister said that measures should be taken to increase the consumption of liquid milk and talks were being held with several parties in this connection.

Main cause for non-communicable diseases is milk powder

Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) has warned that milk powder is harmful to all organs of the human body and it is one of the main reasons behind non-communicable diseases.

Behavioural and attitudinal changes have been observed in society after the consumption of imported milk powder was proven to be unhealthy to the human body, they pointed out.
