Releasing of waste into waterways banned Featured

Nine orders under the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act banning the release of industrial and domestic waste into waterways is scheduled to be presented to parliament tomorrow (21).

These orders will prevent the threat to the protection of fish living species in local waters.

Under these new regulations fishing with the use of a spear gun, pointed sharp sticks and  possession of local fishing boats would be banned.

Accordingly,  the catching of the ‘Thambuwa’ fish (cephalopholis sonnerati), possession, transport, purchasing, displaying for sale and exporting would be banned.

Further these include regulations and  laws pertaining to the registration of exporters of fish and aquatic products, import and re-export, requirements for the above services and inspection of establishments engaged in packaging of fish and aquatic products for re-export etc.
