Was Bodaragama appointed to satisfy two ministers? Featured

Ariyadasa Bodaragama has been appointed to the post of Director General of the Excise Department despite objections raised by the Excise Sergeants and Guards. They had even sent letters of objection to the President and Prime Minister.

Ariyadasa was assigned to the Finance Ministry, but had been appointed to the post of Director General of the Excise Department on the pressurising by a minister and state minister involved in liquor manufacture, it is reported.

The President of the All Ceylon Excise Sergeants and Guards W.L.D. Wijesekara said in a letter to the Finance Minister, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to remove the current Excise Commissioner and appoint another administrative grade officer.

In the letter addressed to the Prime Minister SLPP member of the Minuwangoda Pradeshiya Sabha said, “The post of Excise Commissioner General is a post which belongs to the State Administrative Service. By appointing a uniformed officer to this post, the department would face anarchy in the future.

The appointing of a department head is similar to appointing the IGP of the Police Department. Administrative wise, even when the general is not performing efficiently, there would be no possibility of removing him. But by appointing an administrative service officer, this situation could be avoided.
