Due to the breakdown in talks regarding the Opposition Leader post, Wickremesinghe had suggested during the party senior’s meeting that the Speaker be given the post until the internal issues are ironed out.
He had asked Jayasuriya to take over the Opposition Leader post and steer the party and appoint a leadership board and centred on the leadership board to carry out the party reforms.
Ranil to continue as party leader
Meanwhile the party seniors have suggested that Ranil Wickremesinghe hold onto the party leadership until the party’s internal disputes are resolved.
Further, as the UNP still holds the majority in parliament, it was also suggested that Lakshman Kiriella be appointed as the Speaker. However, neither Jayasuriya nor Kiriella have responded to this suggestion so far.
UNP group to meet on 5th to take a decision
Meanwhile, it was reported that Ranil Wickremesinghe had decided to summon a meeting of the UNP group in order to resolve the issue regarding the Opposition Leader’s post and party leadership.
This meeting is scheduled to take place at the UNP Headquarters Sirikotha next Thursday (05).
Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to engage in a tour of Singapore and Mongolia after this meeting and would not be in the country during the Christmas break.
The MP group is also expected to discuss whether they would contest the upcoming general elections under the New Democratic Front. If this proposal is passed, the UNP boards would be called upon by the party leadership to restructure the party.
According to the UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, at Thursday’s meeting they would take a decision regarding the other positions within the UNP as well.
Kariyawasam also said yesterday that the parliamentary group would also take a decision regarding the Leader of the Opposition position at this meeting.
He made this statement at the media briefing held at Sirikotha yesterday.
