Heavy rains claim three lives: 1156 families affected Featured

Due to the heavy rains experienced throughout the country, four persons including three members of the same family have lost their lives and 4,126 persons from ten districts have been affected due to the rains. 

With the heavy downpour, landslide occurred on November 30th night (30) in Malapattawa area, Walapane - Nuwara Eliya around 7.30 pm.

The incident claimed the lives of four victims including the parents and the 2 grandchildren of the same family.

The victims have been identified as 51-year-old G.G. Ranbanda, his wife 48-year-old K.G. Bisomanika, their 15-year-old son Kalana Pathum and a relative 17-year-old K.M.G.G. Dinesha Karunaratne. 51

The 15-year-old victim Pathum was to sit for his O/L examination today.

The 17-year-old victim Dinesha was an A/L student at the Denike Vidyalaya in Hanguranketha.

According to the Deputy Director of the National Centre for Disaster Management Pradeep Kadippili, 4,126 persons belonging to 1156 families in the districts of Badulla, Batticaloa, Ampara, Mannar, Mulaithivu, Kegalle, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Matale have been affected.

Further, four persons have been injured due to floods, heavy winds, lightning and landslides, it is reported. ‘

Two houses have been completely destroyed, while 46 houses have been partially damaged due to weather related mishaps.

In the Batticaloa district, 569 persons belonging to 158 families have been provided safety at four centres.
