Army Commander’s stand on Gota’s advertisement Featured

The Defence Secretary had written to the Election Commission stating that the Army Commander had notified him that a section of a previous speech he made had been used for an election advertisement of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa without his consent.

In a special media briefing held yesterday, the Election Commissioner had stated that the Army Commander had clarified his stand in a letter sent to the Defence Secretary.

The Defence Secretary had sent a copy of the letter sent to him by the Army Commander to the Election Commissioner.

The Army Commander had stated in his letter that in a certain newspaper advertisement, a section of a speech he made in 2009 had been quoted.

He had stated that as a responsible Army Commander he is well aware that he cannot be part of any political activity. Therefore, he had said that he would not engage in any activity that would be beneficial to any of the presidential candidates.

Deshapriya also stated that the party said to have published this advertisement had claimed that they had no connection to this advertisement.
