35 contenders hand in nominations for presidency Featured

So far 35 candidates have handed in their nominations to contest the presidential election.

The handing in of nominations took place today between 9.00 am to 11.00 am at the Election Commission Premises at Rajagiriya.

However, MP Chamal Rajapaksa and Kumara Welgama had not handed in their nominations.

While 41 candidates had placed their deposits for the presidential election 2019, they included candidates from 19 reputed political parties, 19 independent groups and three from other parties.  

During the next 7 days from today, all rallies have been banned. The police have the power to stop such rallies and report to courts.
According to the Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya, during the period of accepting nominations, 35 nominations had been received. Two objections had also been received, but it had been rejected, he said.

Accordingly, 35 candidates would be contesting the November 16 presidential election between voting times 7.00 am to 4.00 pm.
