He said he was not aware of this decision, adding that at the end of every election he would take around 10 days off and travel outstation. At that time there were no mobile phones and he had come to know about D.B. Wijethunge’s appointment over the radio, he said.
Cooray added that everyone expected either Gamini Dissanayake or Lalith Athulathmudali to be appointed as the Prime Minister and when he had questioned Premadasa regarding this appointment he had lost his temper with Cooray.
Premadasa had told Cooray that Dissanayake and Athulathmudali had gone against them, but when Cooray had explained that the duo had helped the party during the election, then Premadasa had accepted that he had made a mistake.
He also revealed that Premadasa was proposed for presidency by the former President J.R. Jayawardena and it was seconded by Gamini Dissanayake and Lalith Athulathmudali.
