Themeeting is expected to focus mainly on the presidential candidacy of the partyand the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha elections scheduled to be held on October 11th.
Meanwhile,Minister Vajira Abeywardena said that a group of senior UNP members had metPrime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for a special discussion last night (15).
Sajith faction arrogance!
A UNPsenior Minister told Sri Lanka Mirror that it had been decided at the meetingbetween Sajith Premadasa and the heads of parties within the UNF held atFinance Minister Mangala Samaraweera’s residence on September 14th that the majority preferred Sajith and ifSajith is named the presidential candidate they would all support him. Hefurther noted that they are willing to support a candidate who would not breakup the UNP.
MinisterPatali Champika Ranawaka, Rauff Hakeem, Rishad Bathiudeen, Mano Ganesan andPalani Digambaram had participated in this meeting.
Further,the UNP group supporting Sajith Premadasa, Malik Samarawickrama, Kabir Hashim,Mangala Samaraweera, Ranjith Maddumabandara and Eran Wickramaratne had alsojoined the meeting.
Meanwhile,as soon as the talks concluded, Sajith faction MP Ajith P. Perera had posted acomment on his FB account.
However,the official statement of this discussion is scheduled to be notified to PrimeMinister Ranil Wickremesinghe by the party leaders after the Cabinet meetingtomorrow (17).
SajithPremadasa had also told the media that the talks had been successful.
Abolishing the Executive Presidency is Mahinda’s requirement
Meanwhile,the ‘Aruna’ newspaper had reported that the Prime Minister is planning onpresenting a proposal for the abolishment of the Executive Presidency at theCabinet meeting tomorrow (17).
However, a senior UNP Minister told Sri Lanka Mirrorthat this news was false and that there was no such plan.
However,he noted that in the event such a proposal is presented by all parties for theabolishment of the Executive Presidency, he too is supportive of it.
