Clause on President being party leader removed from UNP constitution

The UNPis said to have removed the clause which states that in the event a UNPcandidate becomes the President, he/she automatically becomes the party leader.

The aboveparagraph had been removed from the UNP constitution in 1994, based on therecommendations of the then UNP General Secretary Gamini Athukorale.

Thechange was made as Gamini Athukorale had pointed out that if the then PresidentChandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge decided to take up membership of the UNP,she could also become the UNP leader.

Accordingly, the clause which specified that if a UNP member becomes the President he/sheautomatically becomes the party head was removed in 1994 to prevent anyone elsefrom taking over UNP leadership.
