Based on the powers vested in him by the Sports Act, he had taken the decision to ban Thilangs, who is a member of the Executive Committee, from engaging in the SLC administration.
Opposition for Thilanga from Piliyandala
The temporary ban was imposed as a result of a petition sent by the Piliyandala Sports Club which is affiliated to SLC.
This Sports Club had pointed out that based on the gazette issued recently by the Sports Minister Sumathipala cannot hold the post of Committee member of the Cricket Executive Committee.
Betters and gamblers cannot
The gazette issued by the Sports Minister specifies that anyone owning or engaging in betting or gambling or any family member of such a person is not suitable to hold any post. This has been included in the set of sports rules which accompanies the sports act.
Accordingly, a three member committee has been appointed headed by Sports Director General Dammika Muthugala to investigate if Thilanga could get involved in sports administrative functions and the Minister has asked for a report within a month, according to Sports Ministry sources.
