30 pistols imported for Prisons, remain in Welisara Featured

Thirty pistols imported under a firearms Tender for special operations of the Prisons, are been kept at the Welisara Navy armoury for over two months.

After the terrorist attack on Easter Sunday, the Ministry of Defence had decided to stop issuing weapons, claiming it to be a decision of the president.

Accordingly, thirty 9mm pistols were imported to the country at a price of Rs. 240,000 each and stored at the Welisara Navy armoury.

Since the Department of Prisons is not under the purview of the Defence ministry, these weapons are not issued yet.

However, Prisons officials say that this is an issue in a backdrop where there is a dearth of weapons required for Prison duties.
