The owner of the elephant L. L Thilakaratne said,“all the allegations made by the social media about making an elderly female tusker named Tikira a part of the Kandy Esala Perahera are false. She only took part in the third Randoli Perhera representing the Vishnu Devalaya in Kandy. After last year's Perahera, she suffered from a digestive disease for about six months."
Owner of Tikira stated that while she was receiving treatment a vow was made wishing for her fast recovery. Thilakaratne further stated a vow was made to God Vishnu, that Tikira will be made a part of one or two Randoli Perahera after her recovery.
The Secretary of Domesticated Elephant Owners' Association, Dhamsiri Bandara Karunaratne stated that Tikira was given for Perahera free of charge. The Vishnu Devalaya has given him the opportunity to honour his vow for God Vishnu, wishing for recovery of his elephant.
An elephant or a tusker can participate in the Kandy Esala Perahera only after being approved by veterinarian that the animal is in good health and the same have been obtained for Tikira, Karunaratne added.
