It is said that Basil Rajapaksa feels that it is not necessary to display his citizenship renunciation certificate through the media, as it should only be required to prove to the Elections Commissioner his eligibility when he is nominated as a presidential candidate and in the event objections are raised regarding his citizenship matter.
It is also said that Basil feels that dragging the citizenship issue right until the last moment of the presidential race is beneficial to the party.
It is reported that a decision has been taken regarding a direct meeting between President Maitripala Sirisena and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
According to former Western Province Governor Isura Devapriya, the decision to hold this meeting had been decided at the SLFP Central Committee meeting.
It is felt that there is no purpose in SLFP and SLPP members meeting and that this clash between the two parties could only be resolved by the two leaders meeting face to face.
Devapriya expressed hope that after the two leaders discuss matters and iron out their differences, the SLFP and SLPP could join up as a coalition.
It has been determined by the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa that as President Maithripala Sirisena holds a vote base of 7% to 8%, obtaining his support for the SLPP is of vital importance.
